Week 1: During just about every run, there is a nice long hill. In Charlotte, we have Morehead St, Providence Rd, East Blvd, and many others. Running up these hills can be physically and mentally challenging. As runners, we can use these hills as an opportunity to improve. At first, you may have to walk up a hill. There’s no shame in this, and it can be a great strategy to attacking a course. Running to the base of a big hill and walking up the hill can help you conserve energy to finish a tough run. As you train, you will be able to slowly jog up the hill. With practice and patience, you will be able to run a hill at your normal pace. The key is repetition. To face the mental challenge of getting up a hill, I suggest picking shorter points along the hill and focus on getting to those points. Here’s how it works. Pick a tree or a street sign about 50 yards ahead of you and run to that point. Once you pass it, find the next point and repeat this until you make it to the top. As you run up the hill, you’re achieving small distance goals and this should help you work your way to the top. |
