The increasing cost of gasoline, groceries and other necessities are taking a toll on people across the country. The Charlotte area is no exception. We are seeing the effects of a soft economy at our YMCAs. More new members are applying for YPathways, our financial assistance program. We are also noticing more people forced to make the difficult choice about whether to keep their YMCA membership.
I recently learned about one such family. The father, a long-time YMCA member, was laid off from his job. He came to the YMCA to cancel his family’s membership. Thankfully, the staff person who served him asked some questions and learned about his job loss. Through YPathways, we are able to provide his family with a membership they could afford until they get back on their feet. I have no doubt that this is one of many stories of how our YMCA is reaching out to families and individuals during their time of need.
The YMCA’s financial assistance program supports families who are unable to afford the cost of membership or programs. We guarantee no one will be denied membership based on their inability to pay. In 2007, about 12% of our members received financial assistance, totaling more than $4.9 million. To find out more about this program, visit the Member Services Desk at any YMCA and ask to speak with the YPathways Coordinator. He or she will be able to answer your questions and provide you with a YPathways application.
In addition to providing financial assistance, our commitment to a healthier community has never been more important. Difficult economic times bring stress, which can lead to an array of unhealthy behaviors like poor eating, lack of exercise and even more serious bad habits. To live out our mission - to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all – now is the most critical time for our YMCAs to help families stay healthy. For example, a group exercise class or running/walking group provides exercise, stress relief and connection with other adults. A social or support group offers understanding, empathy and personal development. Our excellent child care programs including afterschool, preschool and child watch provide needed time for parents and growth and socialization for children.
The YMCA of Greater Charlotte has been active in this community for the last 134 years. Last year we impacted more than 279,000 lives through membership, program participation and volunteerism. Now more than ever, we are here to impact lives in a positive way to help meet our community’s needs.
Sincerely,
Andy Calhoun, President and CEO
