In 2007 over 1700 individuals in our community were impacted by the Lake Norman YMCA. By awarding scholarships totaling more than $360,000 children, families and seniors were able to participate in programs and membership opportunities to help improve their over all well being. We anticipate awarding more than $400,000 in 2008 to improve the health of children, adults and seniors in our community. A portion of those dollars are secured through generous contributions by members and the community during our Annual Community Outreach Campaign. Your gifts will go to improve and impact the community in spirit, mind and body.
The YMCA is committed to developing healthy minds by improving literacy.
YMCA Starfish Academy, a nationally-acclaimed program in partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Mooresville Graded Schools, targets first and second graders reading below grade level. Provided at no cost to the families, Starfish serves children who are identified ny their teachers as needing a little extra "push" during the summer.
Seven branches of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte offer English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to non-English speaking individuals. Annually, 800 people are served.
